“When I was your age,“<\/em> my mom said to me a few years ago, when I was about 23, “I used to go to Salvation Army and find dresses from the 1930s.”<\/p>\n

“Ugh, I hate you!!!” I replied, vehemently jealous that in the ’70s, access to ’30s fashion<\/a> was the same as finding yet another ’80s frock or ’90s pair of jeans thrift store shopping today.<\/p>\n

But I didn’t really<\/em> hate her for saying that then. In fact, I loved her more for it – because it showed that the vintage gene descended from her side of the family!<\/p>\n

As I type these words, I’m sitting at the dining room table of my childhood home in Lancaster,\u00a0Pennsylvania, my mother asleep upstairs and reflecting on a few of our conversations these past few days. A trip home to see a doctor always results in these mini “life reflective pow wows” that initially upset me because like most moms do, she is brutally honest about “what she thinks.”<\/p>\n

But in due time I let go of the need to feel right and I remember why my mom’s wisdom, experience and love are my greatest source of inspiration for the best way to live my life. Thank you for your honesty, advice and unconditional love, mom.<\/p>\n

My grandmother, who passed away when I was 14, had this painting in her apartment for years. I can still remember looking at and wondering, “Who is this woman?” before learning about the Kennedy family as a teenager.<\/p>\n

Wearing a mini dress with a Peter Pan collar in the mid ’60s.<\/a>\u00a0My mom amusingly told me that her mother used to force her to the hair salon for perms, because she had stick straight hair. Not surprising, she hated it as a child.<\/p>\n

This is why my mom let my blonde locks run free (scroll to the bottom of the post to see for yourself) and had no qualms when I went cutting my bangs myself!<\/p>\n

Wearing all-white in the spring time. Note the longer cut of the shirt and looser-fitting style pants. These matching top-pant sets were popular in the 1970s<\/a>, often called “leisure\u00a0suits” and made from polyester blends, although my mother’s appears to be a more high-class cotton version of the trend!<\/p>\n

As a strawberry blonde, I must say that the all-white resort look is very fitting. I might have to duplicate this outfit in the future.<\/p>\n

This was taken in a hotel room on my first family vacation (and before my younger brother, George, was born) to the Bahamas.<\/p>\n
